Lightwater Nuance

The weather was lovely – a good job since I was camping – and there was a cheery atmosphere with a good mix of established and new breeders. My impression was that prices were down on last year but the quality of animals put forward is continuing to rise – giving coloured Ryelands a great chance to show off the breed.
Members came from as far afield as Kent and Dumfries and Galloway, sometimes to buy and sometimes just to be part of it all.
I had to be impressed by the time and effort put in by the volunteer stewards – especially Bert Norman who woke me as he arrived at 5.30a.m! Special thanks to Jane Pinches for her suggestions. Our secretary, Dot Tyne, was her usual calm and competent self. Ruth Mills and Judith Winstanley score, in my book, for the best idea. They organised a photo competition complete with 3 laptops (to show all the pictures entered) and voting slips. I love looking at other members sheep – coloured or white. And of course thank you to the judges for their knowledge and encouragement.

The fleece section is making progress with an entry of 8 coloured fleeces this year.
Lightwater Linnet’s fleece took 3rd place behind Ruth Mills 1st and Marion Thornetts ewe fleece 2nd. Ruth also took 1st and 2nd in the Ryeland class. I’ve a lot to learn. The experts say there is still room for improvement so how about entering a fleece next year even if you cannot attend? I’ll happily collect from The Great Yorkshire Show and return to you at Carlisle RBSS or Yorks RBSS if you contact me. I’m already planning my entries for the next show and sale. Hope to see you there.
